Poinsettias
The poinsettia plants herald the start of the Christmas season. Seeing them in flea markets and in homes fills our hearts with anticipation: it will soon be Christmas. The poinsettia is native to Mexico and Central America. The Aztecs used it both for dyeing and for treating wounds. It was a flower they used in their rituals, as its colour replicated the red of the blood of the best warriors. With Spanish colonisation, Franciscan monks included it on church altars in their Christmas celebrations, probably because its red leaves resembled the Cross of Bethlehem.
Subsequently, people loved to decorate their homes with this plant as it creates an atmosphere of celebration and joy to share. It has been given different names. Besides its original name in Nahuatl, which is Cuetlaxochitl, it is also known as Poinsettia, Crown of the Inca, Federal Star and Poinsettia among others.
