Characteristics of Rose

Rose, whose homeland is Anatolia, Asia, Iran and China, is a perennial flowering plant. There are more than three hundred species and tens of thousands of varieties in the world. And there are 25 types of roses in Turkey. Rose, which is a flower type that is in great demand in cut floriculture, is also a favourite in the cosmetics industry. How to take properly care of the roses that bloom for a long time? What should those who want to grow a rose in a pot or vase pay attention to? We have answered these and similar important questions for you.

How Should You Take Care of Your Roses?

Taking Care in the Vase

In order to take care of the rose in a vase, it is first necessary to clean the leaves of the roses that will touch the water. These leaves rot in the water and can cause the flower to wilt in a short time.

The stem of the rose should be cut 2.5 centimeters above each root. Flowers should be transferred to a vase or other container before the cut area dries.

A flower preservative can be added to the water to protect the first-day charm of the roses in the vase. A sufficient amount of preservative should be added. Immediately after cutting the stem, roses can also be placed in a deep vase with 38 degrees of preservative solution added.

If possible, you can leave the flowers for about 2 hours in a dark and cool room or in the refrigerator so that they adapt. Warmth prolongs the life of flowers. In this respect, storing newly cut roses with this method is very effective.

It is possible to revive the roses, which were left in the vase and began to wilt after a while, by holding them under the water. To do this, you must completely dip the roses in a container full of water. This process allows the rose to absorb enough water. It can take 20 or 60 minutes, depending on the needs of the rose. During this process, when the roses are in the water, the roots should be cut around 2.5 centimeters. Roses love water. For this reason, it is necessary to replenish the water in the vase frequently.

Taking Care in the Pot

Temperature and Humidity

Air changes and air currents affect the roses too much. For this reason, you should take care of them in an area with an average temperature.

Proportional humidity, depending on temperature, ensures the growth of roses. 60% humidity is suitable for roses. Environment with excessive moist increases the diseases in roses.

Watering

Watering schedule while taking care of roses in pot is very important. You can water your roses with a half cup of water once in 2 days in October and February in winter. You should water your roses with a cup of water once in 2 days between march and september in the spring and summer seasons.

Soil and Fertilizer

Instead of using ready-to-use soil for roses, it is more accurate to use red soil by mixing it with soil with humus. This kind of soil will support the rose to bloom more healthily. You can choose spring or autumn periods for soil change.

Fertilizers offering nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium supplements should be preferred to support the rose seedlings. Especially phosphorus helps strengthen the stems of roses and accelerate root development, and early flowering begins.

Deep and wide pots should be preferred to grow roses. It is also important that these pots have a sufficient amount of air holes. You can open drainage holes to the pots with insufficient air holes with a solder machine. In addition, it is necessary to take care that flowerpot exchange actions are performed once every two years during the summer period.

Pruning

As long as the right care is applied, the rose continuously blooms. Blooming times of roses vary depending on the type of the plant and seasonal conditions. But in general, they can bloom in average 20-25 days in summer and in 30-40 days in winter. If the flowers completely fade, the correct pruning process should be applied on the plant and the plant should be rested so that the new flowers bloom.

  • Pruning methods are generally applied in the form of hard pruning, medium pruning and light pruning.
  • In the process of hard pruning, branches that have budded out and shed all their flowers are cut.
  • Then the whole plant is pruned 15 or 25 centimeters, leaving four twigs from the root.
  • In the medium pruning process, ten twigs are left and pruning is applied 45 or 60 centimeters from the root. Light pruning is generally applied for roses that have short stems.

How To Propagate Roses?

Roses are propagated by using seed, grafting and cutting methods. To propagate rose with seed, the seeds are rested in a moist moss for 4 or 6 months in an environment with a temperature of 4 degrees. Then it can be planted. Rose propagation by cutting is the most commonly used method. It can be applied between november and march. Propagation by using the grafting method provides the most accurate results. For this method, a rootstock sapling and a breeding sapling are used. The grafting is applied to rootstock saplings. And cutting is applied to the breeding sapling.

Why do petals fall off the rose?

The lack of moisture causes the leaves of the roses to curl and yellow. Over time, these yellows undergo dryness and discoloration, and as a result, leaves start to fall off. Lack of water for a long time can also cause this.

How should dried roses be cut?

Roses begin to fade and dry when adequate conditions and environment are not provided. Branches that look unhealthy on dry branches can be removed by cutting in such a way as not to damage the root. But if there are yellowing leaves, you should wait until it deteriorates thoroughly. In some cases, these yellowing leaves can turn green again on their own.
